How Long Is Recovery From a Facelift?

A facelift or “rhytidectomy” is one of the oldest facial cosmetic rejuvenation procedures available. Today’s modern techniques ensure patients receive optimal results for their facelifts and enjoy the benefits of having a more youthful look.

Mini facelifts are also available for correcting the early signs of aging, such as minor skin sagging in the cheeks, jawline, and neck. Dr. Anthony Farole, a board-certified cosmetic surgeon, offers facelifts and mini facelifts from his Bala Cynwyd, PA, practice.

Facelift Preparation

Dr. Farole will conduct a pre-surgical evaluation before you have a facelift or mini facelift. Doing so will ensure that a facelift is right for you and that it won’t affect any medication you take for pre-existing medical conditions.

He will also ask you to stop smoking several before the procedure and avoid smoking for a few weeks afterward. You’ll need to arrange transport to Dr. Farole’s surgery center and back to your home after completing your procedure.

Facelift Procedure

A conventional facelift typically takes around three to four hours to perform. However, this might be longer if you opt for other cosmetic treatments as well, such as eyelid surgery, a forehead lift, or a neck lift.

The procedure for a facelift involves local or general anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Farole begins by making incisions behind the ears along natural skin folds to minimize scarring.

He will then use techniques most appropriate to your surgery. They typically involve tightening facial muscles and ligaments and adjusting or thinning “fat pads.” Finally, Dr. Farole will tighten any excess skin to give you a more youthful appearance.

The process for a mini facelift is similar, except that any incisions made by your ears are smaller, and a lesser amount of skin gets lifted.

Facelift Recovery

A facelift is a somewhat involved cosmetic procedure that demands at least one to three weeks of recovery time. Patients can apply makeup to their face approximately two weeks after their surgery.

The recovery time for a mini facelift is shorter; you can expect to feel well enough to return to work around five to ten days after your surgery, and you can resume non-strenuous activities around ten to fourteen days post-surgery.

Both facelifts and mini facelifts get performed as outpatient procedures so that you can recover from both procedures in the comfort of your home.

Benefits of Facelift Surgery

A facelift is the ultimate facial rejuvenation treatment you can have. It diminishes the effects of aging, such as sagging skin, neckbands, fine lines, and wrinkles, by tightening up your facial skin and removing any excess skin.

Downtime isn’t long, with the majority of any swelling gone around one-month post-surgery. The benefits of a facelift are long-lasting, but as you age, you may need maintenance facelift surgery in the future to diminish new signs of the aging process.

Should You Consider a Facelift?

A facelift might be the right choice for you if you have visible signs of aging, such as deep wrinkles, loose and sagging skin, nasal folds, and sagging cheeks. All patients should be in good general health before considering a facelift.

If the effects of aging are minimal on your face, Dr. Farole may suggest alternative facial rejuvenation treatments such as dermal fillers or a chemical peel.
