Dental Implants

Life’s simple pleasures can cause problems and pain for the millions of adults who suffer from unchanging tooth loss.

Men and women of all ages are self-conscious about their dentures, bridges or missing teeth. Some have difficulty speaking because their dentures slip or click. For others, the irritation and pain caused by dentures are constant reminders of the limitations they feel. Many are concerned about their appearance and may feel that their tooth loss has “aged them” before their time.

Dr. Anthony Farole has the answers to all your missing tooth worries. He offers secure and natural-looking dental implants from his practice in Philadelphia. If you need an appliance that can reliably stand-in for your missing teeth without compromising either its durability or appearance, then implants might be for you.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental patients missing one or more teeth are usually offered the option of dental implants to avoid a bridge, or partial/full dentures. An implant is an effective artificial tooth replacement that is secured enduringly in the jawbone. The implant avoids atrophy (shrinking) of the jawbone and replaces a missing tooth to maintain a youthful appearance.

What Is the Process of a Dental Implant?

The dentist will determine if the patient is a good candidate to receive an implant, based on bone density, health and other factors. Nearly all dental implant procedures can be performed at our office in Philadelphia. Doctor Farole typically uses local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

The first step involves surgery to place the implant as a tooth root replacement. The implant will reside just below the gums, during the gum healing process, this will also allow the bone to grow around the implant to make sure that it is secure and strong to last our patients what could be a lifetime.

Once the healing is complete, the implant is surgically exposed to begin the second stage. The surgeon will then integrate the post (abutment) with the implant. This post will accept the prosthetic tooth. The final step involves attaching the prosthetic tooth, or teeth, to the post.

Is There an Age Limit for a Dental Implant?

Older patients are often good candidates to receive a dental implant. Generally, Dr. Farole evaluates the patient’s health to determine options. However, Anthony Farole, D.M.D. will often require that his youngest patients wait until they have completed their growth in their late teen years.

Could My Medical Condition Restrict Me from a Dental Implant?

There are certain conditions that might require specific precautions be taken during any dental procedure. However, if the patient’s medical condition allows tooth extraction or other dental treatment, they are likely an acceptable candidate to receive a dental implant. Medical conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes under control with prescription medications, are usually not a factor. Dr. Farole will thoroughly review the patient’s medical history to ensure safe and effective options.

Will My Gum Disease Affect My New Dental Implants?

Patients that have suffered with serious decay or periodontal (gum) disease have had high success with their dental implant. Through our services, we have capably replaced lost and/or badly damaged teeth.

Am I Still a Candidate for Dental Implants If I Have Worn Dentures or Partials for Years?

Yes! In fact, dental implants offer a viable alternative in patients that have removable bridges and dentures. Additionally, the surgeon can design the implant as an effective way to stabilize removable dentures and keep them securely in place.

Will My Smoking Cause Any Long-Lasting or Temporary Effects on My Implant?

Research indicates that smokers have less success with a dental implant. However, the patient can still be a prime candidate especially if they have stopped from their many years of smoking heavily.
