There are a lot of treatment options out there that promise to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Of those treatments, dermal fillers and Botox continue to be among the more popular options.
It’s easy to see why: both Botox and dermal fillers can fade stubborn lines, as well as add volume in key facial areas where sagging has become more pronounced. Plus, both injections are incredibly easy to incorporate into any schedule, as they take under 20 minutes to administer.
So what’s the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?
Botox
Botox is a popular cosmetic injection that’s approved by the FDA for the treatment of forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.
Botox contains a safe and effective neuroprotein that blocks the brain’s signal to nerve endings; once blocked, treated muscles become relaxed, which helps reduce micromovements and facial gestures that can exacerbate lines (squinting, furrowing the brow, etc).
Botox results can last anywhere from three to four months; regular Botox users may see their results last up to six months.
Dermal Fillers
FDA-approved dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid (HA) to temporarily add volume to facial areas where fat loss has begun to occur, especially in the mid-cheek area. Dermal fillers can be used to add volume and reduce wrinkles in a variety of facial regions, including:
- Cheeks
- Lips
- Nasolabial folds
- Jawline
- Temples
- Under eye region
- And more
Dermal fillers last longer than Botox. Fillers meant for your lips can last six to nine months, while fillers designed for cheek augmentation and nasolabial folds can last anywhere from twelve to twenty-four months.
BellaFill
Bellafill is a dermal filler that is not derived from hyaluronic acid. Bellafill is very effective in correcting facial volume loss and treating fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike other dermal fillers on the market, Bellafill is a semi-permanent solution that lasts 5-10 years+ depending on the patient.
How Do I Know Which One is Right for Me?
The right anti-aging injection for you will largely depend on your desired goals, as well as the areas that could most benefit from treatment.
For example, if you’re bothered by the appearance of frown lines, Botox may be the right solution for you. On the other hand, if you have hollow cheeks and under eye bags, you may get better results with dermal fillers.
