Some Teenagers Use Hair Transplant Surgery to Battle Early Hair Loss

When people hear the word balding or receding hairline, the first thing that comes to mind is probably an old man with male pattern baldness. Hair loss, however, is not a problem that comes exclusively with age. The New York Post reports that even teens are suffering from hair loss, and are turning to hair transplant surgery to overcome their problem.

Early hair thinning is actually not that uncommon and can be caused by a wide variety of reasons. Social media, though, highlights the issue. With the popularity of “selfies,” many people feel the need to document and post their daily activities. This becomes problematic for teenagers who are suffering from hair loss, as they are sometimes teased and bullied about their thin hair or high hairline, which becomes obvious in pictures. As a result, they lose their confidence and withdraw from social networks or limit their interaction in it.

Here are some of the reasons why teens may need hair replacement surgeries, from practitioners like Dr. Anthony Farole, D.M.D in Philadelphia:

  • • Androgenetic Alopecia & Female Pattern Hair Loss – This type of hair loss commonly happens to older people, and is more prone to men. However, youngsters going through puberty may also experience this problem. It usually starts with thinning in the crown area, until hair loss spreads and eventually creates a large bald spot.
  • • Alopecia Areata – This is when people experience having bald spots in random areas of the body. People with this condition might observe hair loss in their head, eyebrows, hands or even pubic areas. If the problem manifests mainly on the scalp, hair loss will be noticeable on top or on the sides, or even both at the same time.
  • • Trichotillomania – This is also called the hair-pulling disorder because people with this condition have the urge to pluck out their hair. Most people are aware of this problem, but find it hard to stop. Aside from getting hair transplant, it is recommended that people with this condition also see a behavioral therapist to help them stop the habit permanently.

Aside from the mentioned conditions, certain medications and poor diet can also cause the hair to thin. Medications for thyroid disorders, acne, and contraceptives are all noted to have hair loss as a side effect. Unless the medicine you’re taking is extremely necessary, try to avoid them in order to encourage hair re-growth.

If the medicine you’re taking is prescribed by a doctor, ask him/her if it’s possible to switch to another medicine with reduced risk of hair loss. Finally, proper diet and vitamin intake are highly recommended in order to promote hair re-growth and a better health and stamina in general.
