All patients wonder what their hair will look like following their procedure. It can take months and even a year or more until you see the full results of your hair transplant surgery. Yet, for obvious reasons, it is impossible not to begin anticipating and even planning how your new hair might be styled.
But there are important details to keep in mind before you start sculpting your new look.
Give Your Scalp Time to Heal and Hair to Grow: Although it is understandable that patients want to begin shaping a new coiffure as soon as they can, it is critical to give the scalp time to heal and new hair time to take root following the procedure. Give it at least several weeks or even better, several months more before applying new styles and styling products.
Why? Typically, transplanted hair will fall out following surgery, usually within the first month. New, permanent hairs will take anywhere from three months and up to six months or more to start coming in, and they tend to grow at the rate of half-an-inch per month.
What this means is that you need to be patient as new hair grows in. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen if you let it. Try not to rush it.
Go Slow and Gentle on Shampoo and Drying: For approximately one-to-two weeks following a hair transplant procedure, patients should refrain from shampooing their hair.
Once your Philadelphia hair restoration expert gives you his approval, you may go ahead and start washing your hair. Starting with milder shampoos is better, and you may want to consider using baby shampoo which is free from additives and harsh detergents which might disturb the hair grafts. Anything stronger, like an anti-dandruff shampoo, may require more time, and should not be used without further consultation.
Avoid hair dryers following your procedure, letting hair air dry. Heat from the dryer is not good for your scalp after surgery, and it can also damage the healing hair follicles. If you begin using a hair dryer, make sure it is set to low heat.
Hair Styling and Treatments: At minimum, wait three weeks following the transplant procedure to get a haircut. As new hair appears, you may want to consider changing your hairstyle to capitalize on this wonderful new feature and give yourself the best possible look. Consult with your Philadelphia hair transplant expert about when you can start using hair products and what products can be used safely. Dyes and anything with chemicals should be avoided, though you can dye hair several weeks before surgery.
