What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

At Dr. Farolle’s Facial Cosmetic Surgery Center in Bala Cynwyd, the team use the AcuPulse™ CO2 skin resurfacing laser, a highly effective laser system with eleven different modes to target each person’s comfort level and skin treatment needs, from surface-level to deep rejuvenation. Laser skin resurfacing improves cell turnover and promotes the development of collagen.

How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

The AcuPulse™ CO2 laser uses SuperPulse™, a technology that produces rapid low-energy pulses. This allows it to penetrate through to the deeper layers of skin without harming the overlying skin. The laser creates tiny areas of damage in the skin, which triggers the surrounding healthy skin to send out signals that recruit repair and healing factors to the area. Lasers that work this way, called fractionated lasers, have a much shorter recovery time.

Laser skin resurfacing immediately targets areas of melanin, the pigment that causes hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and age spots. Over time, the skin will bring a new, rejuvenated layer of skin cells to the surface, lifting away scars, lines, and wrinkles. The skin will also produce new collagen, a protein that builds the skin’s critical support system and gives it lift and fullness.

What Results Will I See With Laser Skin Resurfacing?

This treatment offers many benefits for almost anyone who wants to see younger, more rejuvenated skin. These include:

  • Reduced lines and wrinkles
  • Diminished sun damage and hyperpigmentation
  • Decreased appearance of acne scarring or other scars
  • More rejuvenated, brighter skin
  • Firmer, healthier collagen supports the skin

Most people will need one to two treatments to achieve the best results, with changes happening over the course of a few weeks as the skin brings up new, brighter surface cells and builds collagen.

Is There Any Downtime With Laser Skin Resurfacing?

You will see some redness and swelling after treatment. Most people can resume their usual routine within three to seven days. Only use unscented, gentle products on the skin as directed by Dr. Farole’s team, and use a dermatologist-recommended sunscreen to protect your skin while it heals.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

If you have uneven skin tone and texture, lines and wrinkles, or acne scarring that you want to address, you may be a good candidate. You may not be a good candidate for many laser systems if you have a tanned or darker skin tone. The best candidates are in good health and have reasonable expectations about the results they will see.
