Hair Loss Treatment Options

We are long past the time when someone suffering hair loss could only resort to a wig or hat. Now there are some highly reliable options, of which both men and women can take advantage. If you are concerned with hair loss and aren’t familiar with these options, you may want to review them.

Hairpieces

Advances in design and technique have created hairpieces that are perfectly seamless and natural. This is a simple, easy-to-implement solution to hair loss, which can quickly change your appearance and build self-confidence. Hair extensions or clip-ons can also be styled to appear natural.

The ease, convenience, and quick outcome make this option very attractive. But bear in mind that this solution can also create health issues, like damaged hair and hair loss or headaches, if the hairpiece is not a good fit.

Medications

Minoxidil: Most popularly known as Rogaine, Minoxidil can be used by both men and women to combat hair loss. Women tend to use a lower formula dosage (2%) than men (5%). This FDA-approved treatment is applied topically to the scalp. It is not suitable for every hair loss condition, and is generally recommended for hair loss due to female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia.

If you are a good candidate, there are some clear advantages to Minoxidil. An over-the-counter product, it does not require a doctor’s prescription. Also, it has a track record of slowing or even stopping hair loss, especially for women. But there are clear downsides too, in addition to the possibility of it not working. The treatment must be applied regularly and carefully over a course of at least four months, and it will take at least that long, if not longer, to show results. Some people find Minoxidil irritating to their skin.

Finasteride: Most popularly known as Proscar or Propecia, this drug was developed to treat Benign Prostatic Hypertophy (BPH). A later discovery was that Finasteride can also create hair growth too. While this course of treatment is generally effective, it also comes with some notable side effects.

The obvious advantage of Finasteride is that it is effective for most users, stabilizing hair loss. Also, it is easy to take (orally) and relatively inexpensive. Among its downsides are potential sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction and the loss of libido, and the need to take the drug indefinitely to ensure ongoing results. Note that it is for adult men only (over 18), and not for women.

Low-Laser

Low level laser therapy treatment is a non-invasive option for promoting hair restoration and stopping hair loss in men and women. A form of light treatment, it is most effective with androgenetic alopecia or pattern balding. This treatment is available in clinics, or laser devices are also available for purchase and can be used at home.

While convenient, non-invasive and safe, low-level laser therapy has no guaranteed results (and its effects are still being researched). Also, this treatment generally needs to be used alongside other treatments to boost its impact.

Hair Transplant

A hair transplant will provide the most reliable and long-lasting outcomes. A hair transplant can be fully customized and will, after sufficient recovery and growth time, deliver permanent and natural-looking results. My patients who have had this procedure are extremely satisfied. Keep in mind that a hair transplant is surgery, which involves hair grafts transferred from one part of your body to balding areas on your scalp.
