Upper Vs. Lower Blepharoplasty: Which One is Right for Me?

A blepharoplasty, more commonly known as an eyelid lift, can help change the appearance of the lower or upper eyelids. These procedures can be performed separately or at the same time. Located in Bala Cynwyd, PA, Dr. Anthony Farole can help you figure out whether an upper or lower blepharoplasty (or both) is right for you.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Generally, a blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that can improve the appearance of either the upper or lower eyelids. Benefits of either an upper or a lower blepharoplasty can include reducing the look of sagging eyelids, minimizing the appearance of dark undereye bags, and smoothing wrinkles around the eye area.

Upper Blepharoplasty

An upper blepharoplasty can restore the youthful appearance of the upper eyelids. This surgery is less involved than the one done for the lower eye area because it only requires local anesthesia. With an upper eyelid lift, the muscles are repositioned and the fat is removed to tighten the skin of the eyelid. To ensure no visible scarring, Dr. Farole makes careful incisions that follow the natural eye crease.

Sometimes an upper blepharoplasty can be covered by some insurances to improve the droopiness of the upper eyelids because they may be impairing vision.

Lower Blepharoplasty

While it is similar to an upper eyelid lift, a lower blepharoplasty is slightly different because the procedure requires general anesthesia. The excess skin is removed during the surgery, which corrects harsh bags under the eyes for a more well-rested look to the eyes. Lower eyelid lifts are not covered by insurance because the surgery entirely addresses cosmetic concerns.

Which is Right For Me?

Which blepharoplasty is right for you depends on what concerns you want to address. While Dr. Farole can help determine which is suitable for you, ideal patients for upper blepharoplasties have eyelids that are puffy or drooping into the eye and wrinkles.

Those who want lower blepharoplasties have noticeable undereye bags and dark circles.

Some patients in their twenties sometimes have either or both done, so there is no ideal age. Preferably, you are a healthy, nonsmoker who wants to have one or both surgeries.

Dr. Anthony Farole is the best. I came in very scared and afraid. Dr. Farole and his wonderful staff were very patient with me and helped calm me down. They reassured me that i would be fine and took very good care of me. I felt no pain and the procedure went very smooth. Thank you so much for a job well done!
