Usually I delve into one topic related to hair loss in detail. But for this blog, I thought I would cover some frequently asked questions that many people ask or least wonder.
How many hairs are usually lost each day?
The average person loses approximately 100-150 hairs daily. Most of it regrows if follicles are healthy. The typical adult head enjoys 150,000 hair follicles.
Can shampoo play a role in causing or treating hair loss?
It is possible that shampoo, if the active ingredients are not thoroughly rinsed out of hair, may make some contribution to pattern hair loss—but very minor.
There are also shampoos that may make a positive contribution to hair growth, as medications can reach hair follicles more easily when the scalp is well-hydrated.
Can Rogaine or Propecia help hair regrow?
That depends on when you start applying the treatment. If hair follicles are still alive but not growing hair, the treatment may help follicles start growing hair again. If, however, the follicles are not alive, then neither of these treatments—nor any others—will be able to revive dead follicles so they grow hair again.
These and other hair products are capable of keeping hairlines and hair density where they are once their application starts. They will also slow shedding. But they cannot help hair regrow.
At what age should hair restoration surgery be considered?
There is no specific age at which a person, male or female, should consider hair restoration surgery. Patients who are in their twenties to their sixties have visited my Philadelphia office to discuss hair transplant surgery. With an honest and realistic assessment, you will know if a hair restoration procedure makes sense for you.
When will results from hair loss treatment be visible?
No results will appear quickly, and you can probably expect at least several months—but probably more—before you see the best results from any treatment, including hair transplant surgery. It can take over a year, if not two before optimal results appear. That is just the nature of hair growth cycles. But with every cycle of hair growth and fallout, hair should get thicker and longer.
Is hair restoration surgery covered by health insurance?
Unfortunately, it is not covered, unless hair loss was caused by an accident or disease. But if you can demonstrate that the procedure is vital to your professional success, you may be able to claim the cost of surgery as an income tax deduction. Of course, that is a question which can be answered best by an accountant.
